So, TiVo announced the Series 3 yesterday.

For just $800, you can have a TiVo and the privilege of paying $12.95 per month (minimum 1-year contract). Let's see, $3 a month to Adelphia Time Warner for an HD DVR box v. $800 + 12.95/mo. Gee, I wonder which one consumers will go for. </sarcasm>

I loves me some TiVo (3 in the apartment), but at $800, even I'm ready to jump ship. $800 x 3 TVs isn't exactly cheap. For $800 a box, I'll just wait for something else—like the Vista Media Center to (eventually) come out. Then I can save on one of the boxes because the SeXbox 360 can be used as a Media Sextender. On top of that, for probably the same price as the series 3, the Vista Media Centers are full blown (and rather powerful) computers.

I think TiVo was already in trouble, but after this brutal announcement I think the death knell is starting to sound.

Major sadness. My dreams of the world being ruled by a master race of hacked TiVo overlords are fading.

TiVo was love
TiVo is was love.

*sigh*

you better check to make sure the HD DVR box from time warner is licensed through TiVo.

TiVo just won a court case against directtv & dish network for patent infringement with their DVR boxes and were ordered to halt their dvr service.

if it's in the HD boxes, still cheaper than TiVo 3.

although... we're time warner now. Comcast is no mas here, which is probably just as well, we've been in a fight for a while.

Unless your cable company is offering an actual Tivo DVR, you will jump ship and end up switching back very shortly. Everyone I know that has tried this, lasted less than a week before realizing just what shit the other DVRs are. The Comcast one they offer up here has no season passes, has a guide that goes out only 3 days, so pretty much, you have to tell it each and every show you want to record every other day. Bleh.

I've heard the cable co. DVRs have improved a little bit since then, but I doubt they'd work for me. They supposedly have something close to a season pass, but it doesn't remember what you've watched once it's deleted. All in all, I think ur right, they suck.

Thing is, at that price differential, I don't think the avg consumer will care. That price point also motivates me to shop around. I've (surprisingly) read really good things about Media Center 2k5 and the upcoming (which might be 2010) Vista Media Center supports cable cards, and I already have the 360, so I'm inclined to wait a little bit to see what comes out.

yeah, there's a bit I'd be willing to put up with to save $800 x 3 + (12.95 + 6.95 + 6.95) * 12 months.

I assume the TiVo-enabled cable box DVRs won't permit networking though—that's kind of a bummer.

... My lack of actual geek cred is betrayed by the fact that I gleaned the superficial significance of your post's subject, then spent five minutes giggling over the song choice.

Dork, yes. Geek? Not so much, alas.

You rule. That is all.
